Electric vehicle tipping point closing in!
As you may know Tesla delivered their first Model 3’s this summer, marking a big step for the industry and Elon Musk. Musk’s first goal with Tesla was to make EVs affordable, and in many ways they have now made it to that point. Recently Bloomberg released a great report looking at the future now for EVs, and the market is developing fast! “Battery-powered cars and gas-electric plug-in hybrids are poised to grow so fast that, by 2040, they’ll make up more than half of vehicles sold globally, according to BNEF forecasts.” The tipping point will happen in the mid 2020’s when falling battery prices will lead to EV’s having a lower lifetime cost, and will be cheaper to buy, than internal combustion engine (ICE) cars in most countries by 2025-29.

Visions for 3D printing
Finally some 3D-printed every day concepts and products are showing up! Nike and Adidas are at it, pushing for new sport shoe solutions that haven’t been possible before and of course, tailor made.
Now Michelin has unveiled their vision for the future tire, a proof of concept showing a 3Dprinted wheel that is biodegradable and customizable (yes, that means you can change the tread pattern on your wheel if there is snow). The concept/vision is a demonstration of the features that will eventually trickle down into mass-market tires of the future. Importantly, the Vision is both a wheel and airless tire in one. That means there is no need for inflation or rims; the entire mechanical structure is sturdy enough to support the vehicle but still flexible enough to absorb impact and pressure.
