2018, the year of the smart speaker (assistant?)?
At the feed we have long been excited about the Amazon Echo (though its presence in Europe is still minimal), now however Google and several other companies (sort of Apple) have their own speaker and today over 15% of Americans own a smart speaker. During the fall Google said it sold one of their smart speakers every second. And on top of this several new devices using Amazons and/or Googles technology have recently been announced, like the Kohler Alexa bathroom mirror, the Alexa empowered Toshiba security camera, and Sonos One speakers that are now able to use the Google Assistant. The speakers are a way of integrating the assistants that empower them into our lives, but that in itself isn’t what’s cool here. What’s cool is that this is the first step for two big things: voice control (in general) all around us and eventually semi-advanced AI at the top of our fingers (or vocal chords)!
Amazon going for checkout free grocery stores?
The grocery store Amazon Go which is checkout free was recently opened in Seattle, USA. Last year we wrote about a more limited version of the store. To be allowed entrance to the store, you will have to scan your phone at the entry gates, but after that it is just like shoplifting. Will this technique be implemented within Amazon owned Whole Foods and is this how physical stores will be managed in the future?
